Amit Shah endears himself to Dalit saints at Kumbhmela

Thu, May 12, 2016, 12:10 PM
The BJP president, Amit Shah, has made full use of the Simhastha Kumbhmela in Ujjain by mingling with the saints, particularly Dalit sadhus. By the gesture, the BJP sought to send a clear message among the Dalits and the Backward Classes that their interests would be served.

A samrasta snan (bathing) programme was organised on the occasion when Amit Shah took a dip in the Kshipra river along with the Dalit saints and offered prayers. He partook in the lunch programme that followed.

Amit Shah also visited Valmiki Dham, which is the abode of the Dalit saints in Ujjain.

The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh also planned `Ideological Mahakumbh' which would be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among others.

In the previous Kumbhmela 12 years ago, no such attempt was made to get a benefit out of the religious congregation by the then BJP government headed by AB Vajpayee. But this time, the BJP is trying to endear itself to the Dalits.
