Italian marine may return subject to Indian jurisdiction: UN court

Tue, May 03, 2016, 05:21 PM
The United Nations Tribunal held on Tuesday that Italy would have to return its marine, Salvatore Girone, held in India on murder of fishermen charges, in case the tribunal eventually finds India's jurisdiction in the matter.

`Italy and India shall cooperate, including in proceedings before the Supreme Court of India, to achieve relaxation of bail conditions of Sergeant Girone so as to give effect to the concept of considerations of humanity, so that Sergeant Girone, while remaining under the authority of the Supreme Court of India, may return to Italy under the present arbitration,' the tribunal said.

Girone, along with another Italian marine, Massimiliano Latorre, is facing charges of killing two fishermen off the Kerala coast in 2012.

While the Indo-Italian dealings are happening through the courts, the Congress, which is finding it difficult to fight off payments to it in defence deals, is alleging Prime Minister level understanding on the marines issue.
