Modi Govt makes flip-flop on Kohinoor issue

Wed, Apr 20, 2016, 02:29 PM
Facing a lot of flak for stating before the Supreme Court that the famed Kohinoor diamond cannot be brought back to India, the BJP-led NDA government has decided to place the matter before Parliament in a bid to assuage the passionate feelings prevailing in the country over the diamond.

The Modi government had already made a flip-flop on the issue. It told the court that the diamond cannot be brought back, but within 24 hours it said the government would make efforts to bring the Kohinoor back.

Anticipating an opposition attack on the matter, the government decided to place the issue before Parliament, where it could get time to comprehensively discuss the issue and also blame the opposition Congress for not doing anything during its rule over the diamond.

The Centre told the Supreme Court that the former British rulers had not taken away the diamond forcibly. It was given away as a gift to the East India company for passing it on to the British Crown by Sikh Rulers in Lahore.

Immediately, the netizens and others flayed the government contention. This made the government to change its tune. Now the government says its aim is to bring the diamond back in an amicable settlement with the British.
