Dipa Karmarkar has created history by becoming the first Indian gymnast to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro by securing a total of 52.698 points at the final qualifier. She had won the bronze at the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow in 2014.

Dipa's first vault gave her the top position of 15.066 points among 14 competitors. Uneven bars, however, let her down in which she clocked 11.700 points, the second worse among 14 competitors. The girl from Tripura secured 13.366 and 12.566 points in beam and floor exercises.

She could have secured the Olympic berth at the World Games itself in November last as she finished fifth there. Ever since she had been improving.

Dipa was then asked to stand by, but she was later informed that she had secured a Olympic berth. Her chances improved after the world Games performance.
