Japan's Kumamoto witnesses quake shocks as toll mounts

Sat, Apr 16, 2016, 12:24 PM
Japan's Kumamoto town is witnessing a series of shocks of increasing intensity since the 6.5 registered on the Richter scale hardly 24 hours ago. Nine people are reported to have been killed on Thursday night. Saturday morning witnessed 7.3 intensity quake strike the same region, taking a toll of some 30 lives so far.

The second shock was followed by another quake of 5.4 on the Richter scale in the same area. The quakes are reported to have been centred 10 km deep.

Two-floored Houses in Kumamoto collapsed like a pack of cards. While some houses were still standing, those had developed cracks apart from roads that also were torn apart.

Rescue workers are looking for quake survivors amid the debris. They were lucky to find a baby girl after the first shock, but her parents were not around and may have perished.

Owing to the series of shocks in Kumamoto, the government is arranging for evacuating the people to safer places. Power and water supply in the area was disrupted. More shocks were feared there.
