SC accepts fresh petition against Mayawati, even as Centre says please don't

Wed, Apr 13, 2016, 05:22 PM
The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to accept another writ petition regarding corruption by the Mayawati regime when the Bahujan Samaj party government was in power in UP.

Earlier, arguing against allowing the writ petition, the BJP-led Central government argued that there was no need for another petition, as there were no fresh charges made.

As UP elections are schduled next year, it is curious that a petition was being filed against Mayawati after the police registered in FIR in the case in a jiffy.

However, the court made it clear that there would be no instant ruling in the case. The court said it would examine the charges in detail.

Earlier, Attorney-General Mukul Rohatgi pointed out that the Income-tax Department had given a clean chit to Mayawati. Without any fresh charges, how could a fresh petition be filed, he contended.

Counsel for Mayawati argued that the petitioner had sought the BSP ticket in the elections, which was refused by the BSP leader. Hence he filed the false case. It should be stuck down.
