Curfew clamped on Srinagar, Handwara as 3 men are killed

Wed, Apr 13, 2016, 04:10 PM
Curfew was clamped on Srinagar and Handwara on Wednesday after violent protests over an alleged case of molestation of a girl by a jawan.

Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in Handwara in strength after the police fired on violent mobs there resulting in the killing of three people.

The Handwara protesters tried to attack a bunker in the central market when the police retaliated by opening fire. But there was no clarity as to who fired the bullets. Separatists allegedly tried to take advantage of the situation by firing at people.

In all seven people had sustained bullet injuries, of whom three succumbed.

The normal procedure is police lathicharge and when it fails police firing. But in Handwara, the police firing took place without trying to disburse the mob.

Shops and businesses were closed down in the valley for today in protest.
