The poor people of Tamil Nadu await elections for the political gifts that they bring in. This time the Opposition DMK is going ahead with high-tech gifts, promising 4G and 3G smartphones for the 16 lakhs student community. Apart from 3G and 4G, the DMK is promising the students with latops and tablets also.

According to the DMK estimates, it will not only attract the 16 lakhs students but also their family members. So, in all, the DMK is seeking to influence 16 X 5 = 80 lakhs people in all. This apart the party has its standing supporters who will not vote for any other party.

Apart from the election gifts, the DMK is promising total Prohibition in the State where arrack flows. While Prohibition will cost the State dear, not only the DMK but also the ruling AIADMK is promising Prohibition, going by the initial instant success of the Dry law in Bihar.

The parties are throwing economy to the winds by making other tall promises such as total loan waivers. This would entail a burden of Rs 11,000 crore on the State exchequer. The parties are desperate for power so economy is not their concern.

Along with the promises, the one promise that people in general have liked in the DMK Manifesto is the reduction of the price of litre of `Avin' milk by Rs 7.

Not forgetting the major community of fishermen, the DMK manifesto is promising Rs 5000 per month compensation for them during the offseason when they do not go out to sea for catch.
