Australia pose threat to Pakistan, India in WT20 Semifinal berth

Fri, Mar 25, 2016, 05:13 PM
Australia set a target of 194 for Pakistan in the WT20 in Chandigarh on Friday. Australia lost 4 wickets in the process. Captain Smith and Watson continued the good work by the openers, and did not leave any chance in their pile-up of huge score of 193. Smith scored 61 and Watson 34 not out.

The flourish with which Australia batted freely posed a threat not only to Pakistan, who are unlikely to reach the target, but also India, whom the kangaroos would be meeting next.

Cricket is a lucky game no doubt and nothing could be said till the last ball is bowled. But even before the first ball is bowled, India may have been denied further campaign by Australian heroics on Friday.

Even if they lose to India on sunday, Australians may have ensured a berth in the semifinal if they go on to win the match with Pakistan because of their better run rate. Same will be the case of Pakistan, who if they win will get through to seminfinal on account of the better run rate.

In the unlikely event of Australia losing to Pakistan, India may have some hope of making it to the semis, provided they beat the Aussies convincingly on Sunday. Otherwise, India is likely to buckle under pressure, making it easier for Australia. Now only a miracle like the last-ball win over Bangladesh may come to India's rescue.

As of now, neighbours New Zealand and Australia are almost through to semis from Group 2 comprising India-Pakistan-Bangladesh.
