Fortune magazine smiles on Arvind Kejriwal

Fri, Mar 25, 2016, 12:53 PM
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been named among 50 greatest leaders of the world by Fortune magazine. He is the sole Indian leader figuring in the list.

Fortune's third annual report lists men and women from the fields of business, government, philanthropy and the arts for `transforming the world and inspiring others to do the same.'

The other persons of Indian origin in the `World's 50 greatest leaders list' are South Karolina's Indian-American Governor Nikki Haley and another India-American Resham Saujani.

While Kejriwal ranks 47th on the list, Nikki is in the 17th spot and Saujani in the 20th spot.

Kejriwal hit the list with his odd-even numberplate transportation on alternate days to lessen Delhi's pollution threat. The citation points out that when the Kejriwal's formula was mooted, many were sceptical. But the experiment showed that particulate air pollution concentrations came down by 13% in the Indian capital after that.

The list is topped by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, although the e-commerce giant is known to be a tough work master. Pope Francis stands fourth on the list and Tim Cook of Apple fifth.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel stands second on the list and Myanmar's Pro-Democracy leder Aung San Suu Kyi third. Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay stands 50th on the list.
