Child marriage in Times Square, chafed by bystanders, goes viral

Fri, Feb 26, 2016, 02:09 PM
Child marriages are common in India. In fact, `Balvadhu' is a famous running Hindi TV serial dubbed in many languages, to which people are riveted.

However, in America and most of the world, child marriages are scoffed, but put up with in extreme circumstances.

So, when a child marriage was taking place in New York's Times Square, the world's people passing by mocked at the marriage.

While the 65-year-old groom was shamelessly grinning, his 12-year-old bride, much like her Indian counterparts, was gazing the floor all the while.

The busy people stopped by as if to give a dressing down to the bride's elders. `Where's your mom,' one asked. The bride remained silent, while the groom answered `She's inside. What's your problem her parents had okayed the marriage.'

But still the bystanders were not convinced.

It was a mock marriage in the first place. Where to stage it than Times Square.

The marriage was enacted to disapprove of the growing child marriages in the world, which were expected to touch some 1.2b by 2050, according to the UN Population Fund.

Kobi Percis, aged 65, enacted the child marriage with a child artiste in her wedding gown. He put the film, expletives uttered by bystanders such as `You are sadist' and all, in Youtube to increase the awareness of the people against child marriages. It has gone viral.
