Obama to pay friendly visit to Cuba

Fri, Feb 19, 2016, 01:49 PM
President Barack Obama of the United States will be first American chief to visit neighbour Cuba for the first time in 9 decades. He will be visiting Cuba along with wife Michelle on March 21 and 22.

President Obama tweeted that his visit to Cuba to promote friendship and understanding was projected by him 14 months ago.

Confirming the visit, White House sources said that after a long gap the Stars and Stripes would be flying high in the US embassy in Havana.

It was in 1928 that an American President had visited Havana. Now President Obama would be renewing the friendship with Cuba.

President Obama urged the American tourists to visit Cuba in large numbers so as the foster the friendship between the two nations.

There are millions of illegal Cuban immigrants in the US. Without permit, they lead a miserable life in the US.

The American-Cuban relations got hit with the Bay of Pigs episode in which the Russians had tried to set up missiles right under the nose of the US. The missiles were removed in 1962 when America threatened war. Cubans had received the maximum aid from the erstwhile Soviet Union. By subsidising the economies of not only Cuba, Vietnam, North Korea and so on as well, the Soviet economy suffered irreparably and broke up into Commonwealth of Independent States.
