A panegyric for Sepoy Mustaq appeals for mercy

Mon, Feb 15, 2016, 01:25 PM
Along with Lance Naik Hanumanthappa Koppad, there were nine other heroes who died on the Siachen glacier when a giant avalanche buried them under over 25 feet snow recently.

The nation prayed for Hero Hanumanthappa for he was found alive a week after the avalanche struck them, while the armymen were shovelling away the snow for survivors.

As it happened, the country was anxious about Hanumanthappa's survival after he was admitted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital, New Delhi, where he eventually succumbed to kidney and liver failure after valiant battle for survival.

While the nation was desperate about Lance Naik Hanumanthappa, the other casualties were virtually forgotten. They included a `Telugu Tejam' Sepoy S. Mustaq Ahmed from Kurnool. Mustaq is `Telugu Tejam' not only because he is from a Telugu State but also because the Urdu-speaking people of Kurnool are equally proficient in Telugu, which is their mother tongue.

Against this background, an ap7am.com reader, poet K.A. Munisuresh Pillai, has found the nation's bereavement rather lopsided to the general amnesia of the rest of the nine Siachen heroes.

The poet picks up Mustaq to say the people are like the sheep, whereas the Shepherd above has no distinction in the ultimate sacrifice of Lance Naik Hanumanthappa or Sepy Mustaq or the others. They included Sepoy NA Suryavanshi SV, Lance Naik Sudheesh B, Sepoy Mahesha PN, Havaldar Elumalai M, Lieutenant Havaldar S. Kumar, Sepoy Rama Moorthy M, Sepoy Ganeshan G. and Subedar Nagesha TT.

A telling stanza in the poem urges the Ten Siachen Heroes who are Above and looking at us, not to find fault with us for our ignorance in praying for one, but have some mercy on the sheep whom they have shepherded.
