Australian honour for physicist Dr Chennupati

Dr Chennupati Jagdish is the latest `Telugu-tejam' who has been given `the order of Australia' for his contribution in the field of microelectronics. Two other NRIs, Sajeev Koshy (dentist) and Jay Chandra (an eye doctor) have also been given the award.

Dr Jagdish was conferred with the award on Australian Day on Tuesday last for his eminent services to engineering and physics, particularly the field of nanotechnology and to education as a leading academic in Australian National University in Canberra.

`This is a wonderful recognition for 25 plus years of work with my research group at the ANU,' Dr Jagdish, who works on semiconductor optoelectronics and nanotechnology, said.

Dr Jagdish is of Andhra origin and was born at Palle Vellurivaripalem in Krishna district. He obtained his degree from Acharya Nagarjuna University in 1977, PhD from Delhi University in 1986, and went to Canada for teaching.

He migrated to Australia in 1990, where he set up Optoelectronics and nanotechnology divisions in ANU in Canberra. As Professor, he headed the two departments. Besides, he was Director, National Publications Facility, in Australia.

The Order of Australia was presented to Dr Jagdish at a function in Melbourne.
