President Obama indirectly tells India to hold the nerve

Thu, Jan 14, 2016, 11:31 AM
President Barack Obama of the United States has given a parting gift to India. In his State of the Union address, which will be his last officially from the White House, the President has named and described Pakistan as the new face of Islamic terrorism.

This has coincided with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordering an inquiry into the Pathankot air attack. Till the President's speech Pakistan had been in a state of denial, as usual, and was arresting all and sundry, who may not have much to do with Pathankot terror.

The moment the President Obama named Pakistan as haven for new terror, Islamabad went into a frenzy, arresting the Pathankot mastermind Maulana Masood Azhar and raiding Jaishe madrasas. Along with Masood Azhar, many other Jaishe terror prospects have also been taken into custody.

The turning moment came when its name was called. Pakistan felt cornered and knew its game was up. It had realized its duplicity and complicity won't work like before.

Another favour the US had done for India is the denial of another fleet of F-16s to Pakistan.

All these work in favour of India so long as you know how to use them to your advantage. Now that you have the opportunity, New Delhi should go all out to end terrorism spewing out of Pakistan. Marshal your strengths and put Pakistan in a bind, reminding Islamabad that this part of the world is suffused with N-weapons. And that is not going to help nobody's cause. It's time to do the right thing now, and make the world a better place.

President Obama also talked about a Third World War involving Islamic States. Of course he said that would be unfortunate. India being a frontline state of Islamic terrorism should take all precautions.

Pakistan's current frenzy after President Obama's word shows New Delhi's directive to Islamabad had not worked after Pathankot. Only Pakistan's Friends and Masters, the United States, could make the turnround on Islamabad's part. India should make its case very effective. It has to make some sure signs of changes on the ground such as troop movements, setting up anti-aircraft batteries and so on, if it had not already done.

If Pakistan takes it for granted, which it had done all these years, even this opportunity of ending terrorism once and for all will end with a whimper.

New Delhi should so show nerve. It cannot pretend, like the previous Congress governments did, that whatever happens it does not matter so long as it is in power. Except of course Indira Gandhi, who cut Pakistan in two. Somebody has to stick his neck out. The BJP-led Narendra Modi government is in an ideal position. Hold the nerve, when the world opinion is turning in your favour, and go for the kill.
